Teeth whitening is an aesthetic procedure which aims to restore freshness and radiance to our teeth, improving our overall well-being, sense of attractiveness and self-confidence. As a result of regular coffee/tea drinking, smoking, or simply with time passing our teeth get covered by plaque and calculus and become darker. Home treatments and preparations available at supermarkets very often prove insufficient. In such cases professional whitening systems used in dental offices come with help.
Teeth whitening is not a therapeutic treatment, but an aesthetic procedure. To perform it well however, the doctor must carefully examine the condition of your teeth and gums. Before the whitening, your teeth should be treated and cleaned off plaque and tartar and gums should be healthy (pink colored, with no signs of swelling and bleeding). Your doctor will decide which defects should be covered with a special resin preparation and which treated prior to procedure.
Additional restrictions may occur in patients with massive discolorations, e.g. due to antibiotic therapy. Not all of those are prone to whitening. Also it is much harder to achieve the effect of a uniform tooth color. In that case, you and your doctor will have to agree on an alternative method to restore the white smile.
Also please note that porcelain (veneers, crowns, bridges) and composite fillings do not get whitened. The fillings applied onto the visible teeth surfaces will probably need to be replaced too after the whitening treatment to adjust their color to the new shade.
Finally, teeth after root canal treatment (i.e. dead), which -as such -can be whitened but often have a slightly different shade, may end up with a slightly different color than healthy teeth. Whitening effect is alsofar less pronounced in smokers who continue smoking after the treatment.
At Triclinium we use 2 methods of teeth whitening: diode laser (in-office) and removable overlay (self-whitening done by a patient at home). In the first method a special whitening preparation especially designed for whitening with a diode laser is activated.
Using laser technology we are able to arrive at a lighter tooth color even by several shades. As we have observed, the color is very natural and our patients’ teeth remain shiny. The effects, if only the doctor’s recommendations are followed, last for about eighteen months up to two years. Due to the fact that the procedure is fully controlled by a doctor and thus safe for the patient, it is our preferred and recommended methodof teeth whitening.
The method of overlay self-whitening is performed by the patient at home using a kind of a transparent rail produced on the basis of an impression. The patient fills it with a whitening preparation received from a doctor and puts it on for about 6-8 hours during the day or night for 10 days. This method reduces the time a patient spends at the dental office, but fails to protect the tooth necks and gums from potential hypersensitivity.
Teeth whitening, performed with the laser activation method, is completely safe. With advanced systems of light filtering, there is no heat generation which ensures comfort and safety by reducing the risk of tooth sensitivity during and after procedure. Research shows that the ingredients of whitening preparation do not affect the structure of the tooth and are harmless for the enamel. As a rule, the treatment carried out at our office is painless. Very rarely slight sensitivity during or after the procedure may occur (especially to cold). These pass after about 24 hours.
For 2-3 days and preferably for about a week after the procedure “white diet” is recommended. At this time a patient should refrain from smoking, coffee, tea, juices, red wine and other colored drinks or foods. Colored mouth wash liquids and tooth pastes should also be avoided. Our doctor will provide detailed explanations and recommendations tailored to each patient immediately after the procedure.
